| | Like vitamins and minerals, essential fatty acids (EFA's) are vital to the body's function. An inadequacy of these is one of the most widespread nutritional deficiencies among modern humans. EFA's are called essential because the human body cannot manufacture or synthesize them on its own, we must obtain them from our diet.
EFA's provide the body with what it needs to manufacture cell
membranes. The membrane protects the cell and functions as a "gate keeper" - it allows certain substances into the cell while turning away others. If a membrane is damaged, the cell may not get optimum nutrition, nor be able to expel harmful waste products efficiently.
EFA's are known to play a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system and protecting against everyday pollutants. Harmful processed oils and margarines block the activity of EPA
and DHA in the body and are directly linked to the upsurge in many of today's major diseases. EFAs are required in the structure of the membranes that surround each cell. When EFAs are lacking vitality, gastrointestinal problems arise; skin afflictions occur; and allergic reactions take place because foreign substances get into the body.
EFAs stimulate metabolism, increase metabolic rate, increase oxygen uptake, and increase energy production. They also
stimulate the process of oxidation. People who begin to take EFAs when they have been deficient feel an increase in energy levels. Athletes and others appreciate finding that their muscles recover more rapidly from exercise fatigue.
An insufficiency of omega-3 oils (especially an essential fatty acid known as DHA [decosahexanoic acid]) in the diet has been linked to depression. It is a fact that many of the classic degenerative
conditions (cardiovascular disease, some cancers, diabetes, MS, arthritis, PMS, osteoporosis, sterility and miscarriage, schizophrenia, depression) are fat-based and have a proven link with nutritional deficiency.
All EFA's are polyunsaturated; they have carbon bonds that are easily broken and do not result in harm to the body. However,
when EFA's are heated, their bonds change and they become the "sticky" and "harmful fats" known trans fatty acids (TFAs). These are the type of fats found in many deep fried foods common in the "typical American diet." Essential fatty acids tend to be systematically removed from our food supply in order to improve its shelf life, and must be re-supplemented.
EFA’s serve many functions in the human body. They can help
establish and maintain health as follows: | | - Increase energy, performance, and stamina
- Strengthen the immune system
- Lower most risk factors for cardiovascular disease
- Improve brain function
- Assist weight loss
- Regulate organs and glands
- Speed recovery and healing
- Support healthy child development
- Improve digestion
- Decrease infection
-
Keep bones strong
- Protect genetic material
- Ease PMS
- Produce beautiful skin, hair, and nails
| | Everybody Needs Essential Fats |
Omega-3 consumption has decreased to one sixth the level found in our food supply in the 1850s. Omega-6 consumption has doubled in that time, drastically changing the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in our food supply. This change is reflected in the makeup of our tissue fats and in our health. That means that while both omega-3s and omega-6s are required by every cell, we get too much omega-6 and far too little omega-3. For this reason, research shows that omega-3s help in more than twice as
many degenerative diseases than do omega-6s.
More recently (the last 20 years), 'low' fat, 'no' fat, and 'fake' fat diets have been depriving people of both essential fats. Deficiency leads to deterioration of every cell, tissue, gland, organ and organ system and, by extension, to symptoms of deficiency that accompany loss of health. | | Product Features | - Organic
